If you are a Notion user, you must have seen many people share their nice-looking bullet journals made with Notion on YouTube or Instagram. I don’t know if you have ever wondered: I didn’t find similar features in Notion; I have very limited material to use in Notion; how did they make their bullet journals so unique?

Check out this blog post where I present 5 tips to make your bullet journal look better. Get rid of the constraints of only being able to use the elements and images provided by the default system, and use the next tools to take your bullet journal from this:

to this:

How is it? Is it more beautiful? I believe that after reading this blog, you can design a unique bullet journal and enjoy it more.

So let’s get started!

1. Canva

Maybe you have already realized how powerful Canva is — it seems that Canva can cover almost all your design tasks, as well as the cover in Notion, of course. Tired of the default pictures in Notion? There are only several famous paintings and photos. When you want to design a pink, cute style, or a minimalism style, you cannot find any picture suitable from the default, right? A real picture of the universe or galaxy absolutely doesn’t fit your cartoon widgets, and you cannot add your page title to this cover.

So please open Canva to search the numerous pictures, and you can even design your unique cover by adding texts and elements provided by Canva!

2. Customize your icons

Emojis are colorful, but “being colorful” may block your way to design a minimalism style of your bullet journal. You may face similar situations when setting your general style. How about trying other icon websites instead of only relying on emojis? Flaticon and Notion icon are really good choices.

In Flaticon, just search your icon keyword and it will show you several icons with different styles. You can even edit the icons like changing colors, to suit your style better. For example, search “computer”. You can gain several styles of computer, which gives you much more choices than emoji, doesn’t it?

Notion icon doesn’t have editing functions like Flaticon, but it is still a good resource for you to search sketching style icons.

They are also very easy to use — select the icon you like, copy its link and then go to Notion >> Click icon >> link. Paste what you have copied before.

3. Fancy text generator

Although Notion has given your three fonts, they are absolutely not enough for you to design a beautiful bullet journal on Notion. That’s why I’d like to introduce the fancy text generator: lingojam.com.

If you’re a frequent viewer of YouTube or Instagram content about bullet journals or study accounts, you’re no stranger to special fonts — they often appear in the info box of videos or in the text of Instagram. Here’s a reminder: these fonts can also be used in Notion!

Your choices are suddenly expanded a lot! These texts withs special fonts can be pasted easily to Notion. While many of the fonts generated by this site are very strange — you’ll find these if you scroll down the page — it’s never a bad thing to give you more options to design your unique and beautiful pages.

4. Life progress bar

Visualizing your goals is very important. You may often think that the New Year is still far away, but suddenly you realize that it is already close to the end of the year. You may also think you’re making no progress on a project, but one day realize you’re close to finishing it. Goal visualization helps you to quickly and visually discover where you are now. And of course, it can make your bullet journal look more unique and show your pace and attitude in life.

You need indify, a powerful website that can provide many beautiful and effective widgets, including life progress bar. Open this website, find the life progress bar, click it and then type everything it asks you to do. After finishing those steps, generate your life progress bar.

If you’ve already completed Notion’s beginner’s tutorial, you won’t be unfamiliar with the last step — the easiest and most common one, copy the link, paste it into Notion and generate a widget.

In addition to the life progress bar, this website also offers many other widgets, such as countdown, clocks, weather, etc., which are great to add to your bullet notes. They all make your bullet journal look more beautiful, and more importantly, they do bring you a more effective life.

5. Make the best use of Notion itself

Perhaps Notion’s overly diverse and powerful functions make you a little dizzy, but you have to admit that if you can take full advantage of Notion’s functions, they will also make your bullet journal more beautiful. Notion’s layouts can help you build your lifelogging system and make it more organized — Doesn’t being organized also make it more aesthetically pleasing?

Many users have compared using Notion to resemble Lego blocks, and I agree. You need to think through what each block can do. Are they for the walls or the roof of the castle? Do they need to work together with other blocks? Where can you place the block to make the castle look better? This is roughly the same thinking pattern you need to add Notion’s widget now, except now you are resembling blocks with your keyboard in front of your laptop.

Please think about what is your home page and what features you need on it. Then create several sub-pages to consider exactly what needs to be recorded on each page. Putting your daily to-do and your annual plans together on the home page will definitely confuse you and maybe make you anxious. Why I haven’t finished this year’s goals yet, you may wonder. This is clearly detrimental to your ability to improve the quality and efficiency of your life.

Please make the best use of Notion’s functions! Sub-pages, Kanban Boards, and various types of tables. Then put them in your favorite positions.

Conclusion

When the bullet journal was first invented, it was simply used to be effective in improving efficiency. But then it was discovered that a variety of illustrations and designs could be added to make the bullet journal more beautiful and personal.

Nowadays many people make bullet journaling a way of life. They consider it their recreational activity and enjoy it very much. It is indeed a very good recreational activity that can make your life more organized as well as enhance your aesthetic level by making you attracted by beautiful layouts, pictures, and colors.

I’m sure you have a clearer idea of how to spruce up your bullet journal after reading this blog. Go ahead and take action, collect your favorite icons, images, fonts and make your bullet journal a portfolio you can be proud of!
